As I made my way through the hills, traffic thinned out, as did my general sense of unease. Out to the west, the sea beckoned. I whirred downhill along a winding road. I had about 25 percent battery left.

I rode my e-scooter to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
